I am not the most organized of people. I LOVE organized spaces, and I have lots of ideas about organization, but somewhere in the execution of it all is where I get into trouble. It is January, and so it is time to readdress the issue. (I don’t know if I would call it a New Years Resolution as much as a necessity for our survival). And let's be honest--it is really hard to decorate cluttery rooms, so in that spirit, I am joining Thrifty Décor Chick’s “Mission Organization.”
And, yes, Sarah (Thrifty Décor Chic), I HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF!
Moving along…
Part 1-Laundry Room Remedies
These are actually Christmas presents I gave to my sister this year. Believe it or not, she asked for laundry baskets like the ones I have from IKEA to organize the clean clothes in the laundry room. But I couldn't just give her laundry baskets, so I had to embellish, a little. I had a friend with a Cricut, cut their names in vinyl. Since my sis is kind of a spunky girl, I did lime green boxes with white wording for the boys, and white boxes with lime green wording for the girls (no boredom in that laundry room). She was thrilled!
While I was at it, I had letters cut for my laundry basket/boxes.
And here they are in my laundry room. (Yes, Tessa’s basket is way too full! I’d love to hear ideas on organizing baby clothes, they go through them so fast, I can’t keep on top of it!)
I’m pretty sure everything in this picture came from IKEA. The bookshelf was originally used as a bookshelf in our house, but when I realized it fit two of my baskets perfectly, it found a new home in the laundry room. We removed the bottom couple of shelves so that the hampers could fit below and out of the way. I'd like to eventually mural a fun clothesline on the wall with colorful retro-looking clothes, to tie-in the colorful baskets---Oops! This post is supposed to be about organization, not decorating!
While the labels make things look fun, I think they go a long way toward making routines accessible for the whole family.
Part Two--Making the Time
One of the biggest challenges I face when organizing is finding the time to do it AND making time in our daily schedules for the routines that keep things from getting out of hand again the next day. Sometimes it seems so overwhelming, that I just don’t know where to start. Decision-making can be painstaking for me, so I’ve come-up with an idea that I think will be helpful for our current schedule: A predetermined focus for each day of the week. I have done this kind of thing in the past and it has been very helpful, but this time I have taken inspiration from blogland, assigning each day an alliterating name (a la “Wordless Wednesday” or “Tackle it Tuesday”) so that it will be super-easy for me to remember what I am supposed to be doing each day. (Keep in mind, I have a one-year-old, so I can’t be too lofty with my ambitions.)
Weekly Schedule--Daily focus
MONDAY
Meal-planning Monday
Figure out the menu for the week and shop for groceries.
Manage-it Monday
Return emails, phone calls, update calendar.
TUESDAY
Tackle-It Tuesday
Basic cleaning of entire house. Flylady calls this the Weekly Home Blessing. Tuesday is good because I have voice students on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Nice to have the house looking like it isn't a Federal Disaster area before they come!
WEDNESDAY
PaperWork Wednesday
Pay any bills that have come in during the week. Sort, purge, shred, and file paper clutter.
Wash Day Wednesday
Laundry is an everyday thing, but on Wash day, I can make sure clean clothes are all put away, clean the laundry area, and catch-up if I've fallen behind. What about Ironing? It would be a good day for that too, if we actually believed in ironing in our home.
THURSDAY
Thorough Thursday
I will pick one room that needs the most help and give it a thorough cleaning, OR work on serious de-cluttering in one room/area that day.
Triple Threat Thursday
I teach a theatre class for kids on Thursday nights, so I need to prep for that on Thursday, as well.
FRIDAY
Funday Friday
I work on my blog and on creative projects I WANT to do. Those things can be a reward for making it through the week, and I'll still be productive. Hopefully, Friday Funday can also mean date night. We haven't had one of those for a while.
SATURDAY
Screwdriver Saturday
Enlist hubby's help to install, fix, build, hammer, whatever, the things on the to do list...it's really long, right now.
Special-Day Saturday
Growing-up, we sang a song in church that goes "Saturday is a special day, it's the day we get ready for Sunday." Since we don't shop on Sundays, that might mean a quick trip to the grocery store, or filling up the gas tank, but for us it also means preparing our primary lesson (we teach the 10-12 year-olds at church), and getting the kids all clean with their Sunday clothes laid out. Now, with 9:00am church, we'll never be on time if we don't do some Saturday prep.
SUNDAY
Sabbath Day
Aside from church and spending time as a family. I think Sunday's will be good days to work on my family blog. It is kind of our journal/scrapbook/personal history, and a way to stay in touch with our friends and family, so I think it should be updated at least once-a-week!
I'm feeling more organized already!
I realize that I won't be able to stick to the schedule each day, since life happens, so this is not intended to make me feel guilty when I fall short, but rather to give me direction each day, and save my brain the effort of deciding which fire to put out first.
I'm sure organized people are great party throwers, so I'm hoping all of you visiting from Thrifty Decor Chick, will come back on Thursday for my Blogoversary Party Party! If you don't know what that is, go here for more details:
Your laundry baskets are too cool! I have a weekly chore schedule too where I break down things that I do on each day - it has really helped to keep me focused!
ReplyDeleteI love your laundry organization! I have a baby as well and goodness he goes through some clothes!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your laundry room! I'm a very colorful person. I really need to lay out a weekly schedule like you did. Maybe I'll just use yours :-) Either way, great post! This is my first time visiting here, but I will be coming back for sure! Can't wait to see that mural!
ReplyDeleteI love organizing. I've been doing it for a month now, trying to get rid of old things.
ReplyDeleteYou make laundry look fun!! So creative!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Becky
I love your solutions for your laundry room. Very clever! I also love your weekly tips. It sounds like you are one organized lady!
ReplyDeleteOhhh I knew you'd come through with something FAB!! I love these!! I want Ikea so. bad. OH, and for the baby clothes, I keep a bin in my son's closet just for clothes he grows out of. When they don't fit, I throw them in there. When it's full, I drag it out, go through it all to decide what to keep and donate, then take it to the basement and start with a new one. It's worked really really well for me.
ReplyDeleteYour baskets are cute! Like the idea that each has their name on it. Your laundry room looks real organized! And wow on your list. I can't stick to a list. :(
ReplyDeleteI answered you about my baskets in my pantry in my blog but just in case...they came in black. There's other colors too and they come in different sizes too.
Thanks for the laundry baskets sis! It really has helped keep our laundry under control! Now I just need to fix up my laundry room, get rid of the taky 80's wallpaper and install some shelves. We will see when that happens. :)
ReplyDeleteoh and looks like you have lots of followers - nice!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the laundry bins!
ReplyDeleteMy laundry room needs a serious overhaul. You're inspiring me to finally do something about it.
I love that you made organizing pretty. Those baskets are adorable and the use of the cricut is genious. You asked me where I get my baskets inexpensively, the dollarstore. I love that place, but my lock n locks in my pantry were from wal - mart. They often have then 1/2 off. Thanks for sharing your organized and very fashionable space
ReplyDeleteHa -I have meals and chores for every day that go with the day - Muffins Mondays, Waffle Wednesday. Love your ideas
ReplyDeleteOh, I love your weekly schedule! I NEED to do that! And then stick to it. I'm not that scheduled, but I at least want to give it a try! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteOh, I would LOVE to be able to follow your organizational week!! I think I would feel like I'd died and gone to heaven :) I'm going to print it out and see if I can't tackle a few of those things as you prescribed!
ReplyDeleteFabulous post! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your laundry room, makes me quite dissatisfied with my dingy basement laundry area.
ReplyDeleteAnd your weekly list! Oh, what a great idea, and an idea worth "borrowing!"
I love it! I had to use Mr. Linky to your post for those baskets! Ahh if only I had a cricket. Hmm my birthday is in Feb. maybe my hubby can win one for me somehow..... Thanks for the tips. Love the schedule.
ReplyDeleteThose bins are so cute! I love the lime green. And yet another reason why I need a cricut...
ReplyDeleteI love the bins!! Very organized and very cute. I just posted my control journal on my blog as one of my organization tools :) Gotta love flylady.
ReplyDeleteLove your schedule and your wonderful ideas, everything looks so great!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Debbie
Hi Kendra! I am amazed at the info I glean everytime I come to your post! You make a hectic life sound fun :-)
ReplyDeleteYour organized week truly sounds like you are well...organized! I think when my kids were small I was much more organized too. You have to be if you want to have time to breathe! Now that they are older they think I have such an easy life. Hey-I worked for it!! ;-). But making short term plans is more fun than long term-immediate results. Thanks for the laundry tips...it's something that never goes away!!
xoxo
Janie
Loving your very organized laundry room!! Love those bins...just wish I had IKEA around the corner from me! The closest one is 7 hours from here :( Thanks for sharing your great ideas!!
ReplyDeleteTiffany
Okay, you'll have to help me out with the Cricut letters, since this has been on my WISH LIST for about 2 years now (since Matthew was born!). Obviously I can get to IKEA (I've never seen those baskets before, but I've never really looked...), but I have no access to or knowledge of a Cricut. Think you can help me out??? Ü
ReplyDeleteAs for menu planning, I've found it's easier to figure out the menu and grocery lists on Saturday. In fact, my goal is always to do a month's menu and lists the last Saturday of each month. Then I can assess things and often do two weeks' worth of shopping at once (aside from a few fresh ingredients). That can either happen Saturday or Monday, depending on what Monday's meal is. And hey - let me know if you want some of my weekly menus.
BTW, I LOVE your names for each day! I'm not quite as clever, so I just have to keep a list on the fridge to tell me what each day's "chore" is (Mondays = bathrooms, Tuesdays = bedrooms, Wednesdays = mop, Thursdays = wash sheets, Fridays = vacuum & dust. Laundry & dishes are daily).
Thanks, everyone for stopping by, and taking the time to leave me a nice note (Creative bloggers are the nicest people!) I'm glad I tricked at least a few of you into thinking I am organized. :-) I have good ideas. I just have to work on making them happen.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to answer some of the questions/comments here, incase I don't get the chance to visit everyone individually (I'll try.)
About the schedule, a lot of you said you are doing something similar and it is helpful. It is purposely loosly structured, because I find it hard with children to schedule things out too precisely. Inevitably naps won't last as long as they should, diapers and teething will hit at the wrong time, etc. It's just a starting place each day to give me an objective rather than the frustration of not knowing where to start. I'm thinking about listing my schedule in a sidebar and titling it: "What I should be doing now instead of blogging."
For those of you who don't have an IKEA near you, my sincerest condolences. It's becoming difficult to remember life before IKEA came to Tempe. As I sit here and type I'm counting at least 7 major objects in this room alone that came from IKEA. That being said, I'm sure Walmart, Target, or even the Dollar Store might come through with some bins that would work.
And for those of you craving a Cricut--you are not alone. I'd love to have one of those or the Silhouette I blogged about the other day, but in the meantime, I bet you might have a friend or someone you could pay to cut vinyl (ask around), and even if not, there are a ton of vinyl sellers on Etsy that I am sure would do custom orders for you. My sister lives next door to a friend with a Cricut, so pretty much everything in her house has been vinyl-fied.
Wow! That ended up being long enough for it's own post. Thanks again for the comments, and I hope you'll all be back tomorrow for the big party!
Love those laundry baskets girl! I do similarly at my house... only the buckets have sharpies and not vinyl... ahh.. always room to improve:)
ReplyDeleteI used to sort and do things by color but gone are those days. Too many piles to sort again, fold and put away. Simplify: All the kids have their own bucket with name. Dirty clothes go it, I dump it in the washer on their wash day... on cold.. yes, all together...hate me. I dry, they fold, they put away. Landry aint so bad anymore... more time for those fun fridays!
I love the laundry baskets
ReplyDeleteVery cool laundry center! Names on the baskets are great! Good ideas here..;

LOVE LOVE LOVE Your schedule. I think I will cut and paste and adapt into MY insanity! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI really love the weekly schedule. I especially love the fun friday - because I always feel guilty about getting to my creative projects when I have other things that need my attention. Now I can say that I will get to that mess on tuesday - today I craft. Nice.
ReplyDeleteI love the big personalized laundry baskets...we have little baskets, because our laundry room is small...Someday! Love your weekly plan, and especially that you schedule time for fun!
ReplyDeleteThose personalized laundry baskets are the best! I saw a friend do this and I've been wondering if something like this would work for us. It looks like I need a trip to Ikea!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those labels on your bins. Those fonts are so cute! I have become one of your followers. I hope you don't mind!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the ideas!
