I was really excited about the gifts my kids gave their teachers this year for Christmas. (The pictures really don't do them justice.) Some friends and I got together and made scrabble tile necklaces (using this fantastic tutorial), for all kind of friends and siblings, etc. (You may remember this Insanity Zone from my home tour). Instead of using scrapbook paper for the necklaces we made for their teachers, I used my children's original artwork. I had them draw pictures of their teachers. Then I scanned them into the computer, shrunk them down to tile size, and printed them out. From that point I just followed the original directions. The top one is Kira's picture of her teacher and her. I loved Trenton's stick figure drawings of his teachers. This one really captures the essence of her hair!
If nothing else, these gifts are one of a kind! You could use this idea for end of year gifts or for Mother's Day (Grandma's) or Christmas next year. It took us a while to track down all of the supplies, so I would recommend working with a friend and making several necklaces at once to make it work the time and expense. They are fun to make! I'm wanting to get more tiles so I can make some more! Just make sure the paper gets adhered well when you glue it to the tile, before applying the glaze, or the drying glaze might cause it to curl up at the corners. It's good to print some extra pictures for this reason. And watch out for bubbles when applying the glaze! That is the trickiest part! Happy crafting!
those are insanely cool!
ReplyDeleteLove them!! and Love the idea of using your kids' original artwork =)
These are amazing and something I will definitely have to try...this would be a great gift for my mom, she always loves anything from her grand babies!
ReplyDeletethat is way cool I want to make them too now
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely brilliant. I LOVE this project, but the "custom" pictures made it ten times better! I found a store at Etsy that sells all the supplies for these together. She's priced really well, too. I can't remember the name right now. If you need it, just drop me a line. Great work, friend!
ReplyDeleteAS a former art teacher I have to say that this would have been one of my all time favorite teacher gifts...if I go back to work can I have your kids in my class? Great job Kendra. Super cute and creative!
ReplyDeleteWow. What a wonderful project. Amazing! Thanks for sharing that idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the love!
ReplyDeleteChris, I probably should have mentioned that I found that awesome tutorial because of your post at your "I can make that" party. Thanks so much for that!
And Pink, sure you can teach my kids! Do you live in AZ?
those are the neatest things I have seen, I would love to make them, can you e-mail me and tell me how to do.:)
ReplyDeletethanks
Jean

Everyone I gave those tiles to loves them, and told me of all the compliments they've received. Personally, I get lots of compliments on my music charm, so I can attest. Ü But since I didn't give them to my kids' teachers for Christmas, I think I'll have to steal your idea of original artwork for the end-of-year gift. I'll just have to get my own DiamondGlaze, since you and Karli have the bottles...
