We are in full birthday-party, church Easter party with no budget, and family Easter dinner preparation mode around here. (Yes, I'm about to lose whatever sanity that might have remained). I'm really excited about our plans for my daughter's birthday party tomorrow, but need you to cross your fingers for me, that I can pull it all off, (and if anyone knows of a housekeeping fairy--I could sure use one about now!)
We are doing a spa day, with a little pizazz, so when Silhouette sent me the rhinestone bundle kit to try out, I knew it would be perfect for making a blinged-out shirt for my daughter to wear to her party.
This process is a bit different than cutting out other things with the Silhouette so I was a bit nervous that I would mess it up. But if you take the time to read the directions, it's really pretty easy to do!
I didn't find the exact design I wanted, but was able to grab a couple of things I liked and work with them. This is actually what I LOVE best about Silhouette is that you can do your own designs! I picked a heart-shaped balloon, but it was filled with rhinestones, and was a little big. NOTE: Do not resize rhinestone images! They are set to cut at the right size for the rhinestones. But since I couldn't resize, I just modified the design. I took out the inner rhinestones and added the #10 inside the balloon. I was able to move the edges of the heart a little to make room for the #. I also removed some rhinestones at the bottom of the design (all before cutting).
This is the part that I thought would be ridiculously tedious, but it really isn't so bad with the tools that come in the kit. The brush worked to get a majority of rhinestones in the right place. The pick-me-up tool is essential for getting the rest. It would be nice to use in other crafting project that use small items, as well!
When I got all of the rhinestones in place it looked like this. Smooth sailing right?
No. But this didn't have anything to do with Silhouette. It was all me.
{Cue Avril Lavine: "Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?"}
I had purchased a simple white t-shirt from Target to put the design on. I was thinking the clear rhinestones on the white might be a little boring, so I scrounged around for something to quickly spruce it up. I found a decade old bottle of spray fabric pain (and tried mixing some acryllic paint to get a better color). Well it didn't spray how or where I wanted it to at all. (That's what I get for being cheap)
I thought I might salvage it as a retro '80s paint-style shirt, but it was looking worse so I....
busted out the sewing machine! (Shocking I know!) This is where it would have been really nice to have the Silhouette fabric product to cut some nicely-shaped appliqués. But alas (being cheap, again), I found a piece of purple fabric, cut in into a rectangle and sewed it on leaving a bit of a border to fray and curl (Yes. I did it on purpose. Better to go for sloppy and hit the mark, than to go for clean and end up sloppy anyway. :-))
I ironed the rhinestones to the center of the rectangle, and think it came out pretty cute considering the time and resources I had left for this project. She will be excited to be sparkle-y at the spa!
Disclaimer: Yes. I know you can still see a bit of rogue pink paint on the sleeve. I'm hoping to bleach that out, and I had one stubborn rhinestone that wouldn't stay on the shirt. The others all transfered nicely. I'll have to try again on that one.
In the meantime, if you are looking to add a little bling to your life--or at least your wardrobe, today is your lucky day!
